Doxycycline is used in the management of adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and in the management of acne in adults and adolescents aged 14 years and over.
The dosage of doxycycline may vary according to the indication, patient's weight and the effectiveness of treatment. The dosage may be increased based on the total number of days of treatment, the frequency of attacks and the severity of symptoms.
The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms and the duration of disease activity. Treatment can be continued for up to 6 months. The dosage may be increased in divided doses by the healthcare professional.
Doxycycline is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation. Doxycycline should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to some tetracyclines or to macrolide antibiotics.
The patient's cardiovascular status should be evaluated, e.g. left ventricular function, cardiovascular status, pre-existing hypertension, concomitant use of any diuretic or mineralocorticoid therapy, concomitant use of other antihypertensive agents e.g. beta-blockers or antiplatelet therapy. Do not use in patients with impaired liver or kidney function.
The patient's renal function should be evaluated, e.g. with glomerular filtration studies, as do not exceed 3.0 mg/min/5 mL (1.25 mL/min/1.73 m2) above the background unaltered urine output.
The common side effects are nausea (one tablet twice a day for 5 days), diarrhoea (one tablet twice a day for 5 days), abdominal pain or cramping. Rarely reported side effects include photosensitivity, rash, haemoptysis and maculopapular distribution of the rash or maculopapusn (a maculopapus.
Doxycycline should be used with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to tetracyclines. Discontinue doxycycline on an empty stomach or after a few days of treatment if symptoms persist. Do not take doxycycline with antacids, iron or zinc containing fluids, iron preparations, antacids, magnesium containing preparations, cimetidine or probenecid tablets.
Doxycycline should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal intolerance e.g. after eating or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Patients with known liver or kidney impairment should consult their healthcare professional. Patients with severe renal impairment should use alternative treatments e.g. dialysis (DF).
Avoid use during pregnancy or lactation. Doxycycline crosses the placenta and may harm developing baby teeth and gums. Avoid nursing while taking doxycycline. Consult your healthcare professional if you suffer from visual disturbances such as blurred vision, visual-tricuousness, reduced or absent sensitivity to light and/or sensitivity to sound (a rare skin condition)
Contraindications to the use of doxycyclineYou need to take a prescription medicine that contains doxycycline as needed, and the person who receives this prescription will need to be at least 18 years old and has a documented allergic reaction to doxycycline or any other medication. These individuals should not be taking doxycycline or any other medication unless they are listed in the WARNINGS section.
Patients who are allergic to doxycycline or any of its ingredients (except aspirin), other tetracyclines, or any of the other ingredients in doxycycline must not be taking this medication.
This medication should not be used in individuals who have a history of liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, thyroid disease, or kidney disease.
Do not take doxycycline if you are allergic to aspirin or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
If you have allergies to any other medicines or substances (except doxycycline), you must not take this medication. If you have an allergy to sulfonamide medicines, or have been allergic to other antibiotics, you must not take this medication.
If you are pregnant or nursing, you should not take doxycycline.
If you have a serious allergic reaction to doxycycline, you should not take this medication. Talk to your doctor before taking doxycycline.
